Overview

Galadriel is among the oldest Elves in Middle-earth, a Noldorin princess who came to Beleriand in the First Age and became the Lady of Lothlórien. Her refusal of the One Ring — “I pass the test” — is one of the story’s great moral turns.

Biography

Of the Noldor

Galadriel was born in Valinor to Finarfin and Eärwen, granddaughter of Finwë. She came into exile in Middle-earth with the Noldor.

Lothlórien

With Celeborn she ruled the Golden Wood, preserving something of the Elder Days against the passage of time with the power of her Ring, Nenya.

The test

When Frodo offered her the One Ring she refused it, accepting instead the diminishing of her realm that the Ring’s destruction would bring.

The last journey

After the War of the Ring she passed over the Sea, the ban of the Valar at last lifted.

Arc & development

Galadriel is largely fixed in wisdom, but the war tests whether she will use power or relinquish it; she chooses relinquishment.
